Kalinchowk Small Hydropower Project (KSHP)

Kalinchowk Small Hydropower Project (KSHP) is a 3 MW run-of-river project located in Dolakha District, Bagmati Province, Nepal.

Project Overview

Kalinchowk Small Hydropower Project (KSHP) is a 3 MW run-of-river project located in Dolakha District, Bagmati Province, Nepal. Developed by Himalayan Energy Pvt. Ltd., the project is licensed until 2116 B.S. and has a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Nepal Electricity Authority. Designed with three intake systems Budhekhani (primary), Bhumithan, and Shikharjun the project will generate an estimated 16.4 GWh of clean energy annually, supplying both wet- and dry-season electricity to Nepal’s national grid.

Key Features & Innovation

• Multi-intake system: Uses three rivers for reliable year-round water supply. • Modern hydraulic design: Includes diversion weirs, gravel trap, settling basin, 816 m headrace pipe, surge tank, and 585 m penstock for efficient flow management. • Grid connectivity: Linked to NEA’s Singati substation with a 33 kV transmission line. • Environmental compliance: Approved Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) ensures sustainable water use and ecological protection.

Project Impact

• Positive: Provides renewable electricity to the national grid, reduces dependence on fossil fuels, and supports Nepal’s clean energy transition. Creates local jobs during construction and operation while upgrading local infrastructure such as access roads. • Environmental/Social: Minor impacts like land use, slope stability, and flow alterations will be managed through mitigation measures outlined in the IEE (including 10% environmental flow release).

Environmental Benefits

Reliable supply of clean and renewable electricity to Nepal’s grid.
